Commercialization of Imaging Science

I'm at RIT in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science getting ready to listen to a panel on the Commercialization of Imaging Science.

Panel Moderator: Richard A. Kaplan, CEO Pictometry International Corp

The panel:

Areas of Discussion

Present Demand

Rolleston: Higher Image Quality, more automation, ease of use.

Future Demand and Technology

Cost: Printing becoming a consumer products industry. More B2C. More needs to be done to make print (graphics on things) easier.

IP Rights and Protection

Pat: Basic overview of Intellectual Property law. Copyrights, Trademarks, Patents, Trade Secrets.

Pat: Patent Strategy:

  • Don't reinvent the wheel, secure the rights.
  • Open source auditing. If you use OSS in your systems, make sure you understand the license.
  • Defensive Patent Program. Recommend that 10% of revenue be spent on a patent program.
  • Patent Portfolio. Start-ups should build a patent portfolio. Can be used as bargaining chips when companies knock out the door with a cease and desist.

Start-up Challenges

Pat: Intellectual Property issues (threats).

Cost: The graphics on things is a trillion dollar industry worldwide. Within this industry there are pockets of potential for high ROI success and areas of poor performance.

My Thoughts

Most of the discussion was on managing Intellectual Property rights for imaging science businesses and how to manage academic and corporate research cooperation.
