Offshoring
TrendWatch Graphic Arts has released a study that evaluates the impact of offshoring of print on the US printing industry. According to their press release the Offshore Printing: The Market for Overseas Print Providers report answers some fundamental questions about offshoring, including:
does the offshoring trend represent a threat or an opportunity for domestic printers? Or both? And how much of a threat or an opportunity is it? What types of print products are domestic content creators outsourcing? Is it for domestic or foreign distribution? Why are they outsourcing print production? Are there other mitigating factors that can lessen the threat or impede the opportunity? And what are the implications for printers, creatives, suppliers, and manufacturers?
The report is available from TrendWatch Graphic Arts for $995.
Offshoring of US Print to China
Yuen Wai Chow, a recent graduate of the MS in Print Media program at RIT examined offshore printing between the United States and China for her master thesis.
In Yuen's study, she surveyed both Chinese printers and US print buyers. The survey results from Chinese printers provide a glimpse at how they view the US market for print. Not surprisingly, US print buyers were somewhat reluctant to share information with her.
Yuen's thesis is freely downloadable from the RIT Digital Media Library: A Study of Offshore Printing Between the United States and China
Yuen currently resides in Hong Kong, she can be reached at:
