Confusing GRACoL
On the heels of hitting publish on the entry about GRACoL teaming up with ISO TC130, comes an email posted to the Printing across borders discussion list from from Dianne Kennedy of IDEAlliance on some confusion about the terms "GRACoL" "GRACoL 7" and "G7", which many tend to use interchangeably even though they have very different meanings!
The gist of the email has been recently posted to the GRACoL website under G7 Vs. GRACoL 7 on the About GRACoL page.
What We Got Here Is A Failure To Communicate
Once again GRACoL is playing catch-up due to a lack of communication beyond their core group of followers. If they would have been more transparent to begin with, I doubt there would be as much confusion about their groundbreaking work as there is today.
What GRACoL is trying to accomplish with the new GRACoL 7 specification and the G7 proof-to-print process is paradigm shifting and can be confusing to an industry that has utilized a single method of pressroom metrology for the last 50 years.
If you look at the GRACoL News page, you will notice that the temporal consistency of news postings is rather poor. E.g only three this year.
I know there has been more than three newsworthy events this year related to GRACoL 7 development activities: pressruns, meetings, webcasts, etc. All of these events could have been utilized to make their activities more transparent.
My suggestion: the GRACoL Committee should start blogging and use all the events related to their work to foster open communication in the print community.
