GMB Acquisition Redux

Back in January I mentioned that X-Rite acquired GretagMacbeth when actually X-Rite had only made an offer to purchase GretagMacbeth from Amazys Holding AG.

Now there are reports that Eichhof Holding AG, best known in Switzerland for the Eichhof beer brand, has sent a letter of intent to make a competing public tender offer for all of Amazys Holdings AG shares, subject to successful due diligence.

Eichhof Holding AG is also the parent company of color management solution providers datacolor and ColorVision.

Is More Competition Better

In various comments to the press Amazys Holding AG's CFO Rolf Jeger said the board is supporting the takeover offer made by X-Rite Inc, at least until a legally binding offer has been tabled by Eichhof Holding AG.

I question weather X-Rite buying GMB is a good for the color management industry. What happens to innovation when the two top tier companies become one? Would GMB (and the industry) be in better hands if Eichhof took over and the two big guys were required to innovate to stay on top? Innovation in color management systems is already too slow.
