RR Donnelley Patent Lawsuit
On January 17th, RR Donnelley & Sons Company filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Quark Inc, and Creo Inc. (Now a Kodak GCG Entity) for allegedly infringing on patents in the area of digital print processes.
The patents referenced in the lawsuit are:
United States Patent No. 6,205,452: Method of reproducing variable graphics in a variable imaging system
United States Patent No.6,327,599: Apparatus for controlling an electronic press to print fixed and variable information
United States Patent No. 6,844,940: Imposition process and apparatus for variable imaging system
United States Patent No. 6,952,801: Book assembly process and apparatus for variable imaging system
I agree with Cary Sherburne of WhatTheyThink's analysis:
While we at WhatTheyThink are certainly not legal or patent experts, these patents appear to be quite broad and ramifications could be significant for both the variable data and on-demand book printing segments of our industry if RR Donnelley is successful in its claims.
