Analysis of Book Manufacturing for the US Market
Last spring in the Intro to Graphic Media Research course we spent a lot a time discussing the emerging trend to send print production offshore.
One of the research projects was to examine book manufacturing trends to determine where books are being printed. This was accomplished by visiting local bookstores and sampling a large number (189/type) of books from various book types (E.g Full-color Hardcover).
I've made the report available on the Research Documents page (Direct download).
Key Findings:
165 out of the 189 (87%) sampled in the single color hard cover (BWH) category were manufactured in the US.
China was the leading manufacturer (38% of the sample) for books in the Full-color Hardcover (FCH) category. The 12% of the books sampled were manufactured in the US.
For the Full-color Softcover (FCS) category, 29% of the books sampled were produced in China. 24% were produced in the US.
98% of the sample pop-up books were printed offshore.
